Getting Governance Right

Getting Governance Right – Good Governance and Principled Leadership for Housing Co-ops talks about how important good governance is if co-ops want to make sure they have sound management. This Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada 2020 Vision guide lists some of the results co-ops should look for from governance and management and explains the important differences between the two. It also points out that although good governance and sound management are not the same thing, they are very closely linked, if one is weak, the other will be weakened.

Governance is the guidance and safekeeping of a housing co-op by the board of directors. Leadership is about the directors themselves. It is the qualities and values directors need to do a good job on the board as they meet their duties of care and loyalty to the co-op. This guide is all about these twin themes of governance and leadership.
