Fund for International Co-operative Development Launches to Foster Global Resilience and Peace

On 21 December 2024, the cooperative movement celebrated a historic milestone in Rochdale—the birthplace of cooperation. This celebration was the launch backdrop for the Fund for International Co-operative Development (FICD). This marks the first-ever fund dedicated to supporting global communities through crises, fostering peace, and building sustainable economies.

Driving Change Through Cooperation

The fund represents a new chapter in leveraging cooperative principles to create meaningful change. It is developed collaboratively by leading UK cooperatives, including Co-op Group, The Midcounties Co-operative, Central Co-op, Lincolnshire Co-op, and Co-operatives UK.

Furthermore, key partners such as the Co-operative College, Co-operative Heritage Trust, and Co-op News are adding their expertise to ensure the fund’s success. Together, they aim to establish multi-million-pound partnerships to amplify the impact of cooperatives in driving sustainable, inclusive development.

Focus Areas of the Fund

The Fund for International Co-operative Development will focus on three critical areas:

  • Crisis Response: Delivering immediate humanitarian aid in regions affected by conflict and natural disasters.
  • Medium-Term Rebuilding: Supporting cooperatives in post-crisis recovery efforts.
  • Long-Term Mutual Aid: Promoting social justice by fostering resilient, inclusive economies through cooperative models.

Launching into the UN 2025 International Year of Co-operatives

This pivotal moment coincides with the upcoming UN 2025 International Year of Cooperatives, themed “Cooperatives Build a Better World.” The theme emphasizes the crucial role of cooperatives in creating resilient and equitable global communities. The FICD is poised to play a central role in realizing this vision, showcasing how cooperatives can address global challenges.

Join the Movement

The Fund for International Co-operative Development is actively building its operations and membership for 2025. It’s inviting cooperatives and their members to join this initiative by contributing financially or sharing their expertise.
