2026 International Day of Cooperatives: Cooperatives for a Peaceful World

Online

July 04, 2026

The International Cooperative Alliance has announced “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World” as the theme for the 2026 International Day of Cooperatives (CoopsDay), which will be celebrated on 4 July 2026. Celebrated by the international cooperative movement since 1923 and officially recognised by the United Nations in 1995, CoopsDay highlights the contribution of cooperatives to more inclusive, democratic and sustainable societies.

This year’s theme reflects the cooperative movement’s role in fostering dialogue, solidarity and social cohesion at a time marked by conflict, growing inequalities, housing insecurity and increasing social fragmentation. It also echoes the 2019 ICA Declaration on Positive Peace through Cooperatives, which calls on cooperatives to strengthen their contribution to peaceful and inclusive societies.

For Cooperative Housing International, housing cooperatives are part of this effort every day. Beyond providing homes, they help build stable and resilient communities rooted in mutual support, democratic participation and long-term commitment to people and place. In this sense, cooperative housing contributes not only to affordability, but also to trust, inclusion and positive peace.

These ideas are explored further in the cooperative movement’s new SDG 16 Brief, which highlights cooperatives as “schools of democracy” and local infrastructure for peace.

CHI encourages its members and partners to join the celebration and share how housing cooperatives contribute to more inclusive, resilient and peaceful communities around the world.
