2025 International Year of Cooperatives: CHI’s Key Contributions
Cooperative Housing International (CHI) is spearheading initiatives for the 2025 International Year of Cooperatives (IYC), focusing on knowledge sharing, youth engagement, policy advocacy, and showcasing cooperative housing globally. Highlights include:
- Knowledge Sharing: CHI will host a board meeting in Liverpool (July 3) during the Co-operatives UK Congress in Rochdale, featuring site visits and discussions on housing solutions.
- Youth Leadership: Collaborating with the European Student Cooperative Housing Alliance to promote and support student housing cooperatives.
- Policy Advocacy: Strengthening legal frameworks and financing options to elevate cooperatives as a global housing solution.
- Global Showcase: CHI will participate in the International Social Housing Festival in Dublin (June 4-6) and the Open House Worldwide event.
New Delhi Board Meeting Highlights
CHI’s recent board meeting and General Assembly in New Delhi set strategic priorities for 2025, including streamlining operations and launching cost-effective initiatives. Approved plans aim to maximize CHI’s impact on the global cooperative housing movement.
Spotlight on Global Cooperative Housing Success
- Australia: Rising costs have led students in Canberra to embrace cooperative housing as a sustainable solution.
- Manitoba, Canada: A rural community created a seniors’ housing cooperative, accessing over $800,000 in grants and showcasing the power of local initiatives.
- Croatia: A proposed National Housing Policy supports cooperative housing, with Pula piloting non-profit cooperatives offering lifelong, inheritable rights to occupancy.
- New York, USA: The Fair Chance for Housing Act (effective January 1, 2025) will prevent housing discrimination based on criminal history.
