Remembering Gregory J. Carlson

The cooperative movement has lost a great champion of housing cooperatives in the United States. Gregory Carlson, a long-time board member of the National Association of Housing Cooperatives (NAHC), was also the founder and leader of the Registered Cooperative Manager (RCM) program. Greg passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 26, 2023.

Greg’s background was in accounting and property management. He managed the large cooperative where he lived for many years, bringing in every possible innovation for energy conservation and efficiency of operation.

When his cooperative joined the Federation of New York Housing cooperatives in the 1980s, Greg actively participated and soon rose to a leadership position. Soon after being introduced to NAHC Greg played a leadership role where he shared his management expertise and helped develop the RCM program.

Greg was president of the board of NAHC from 2014-2018, Board Chair from 2019-2023, Chair of the Registered Cooperative Manager (RCM) Program from 2009-2017, and RCM Chair Emeritus from 2019-2023.

Greg was a great supporter of the wider cooperative housing movement and was instrumental in encouraging the NAHC board of directors in becoming a member of Cooperative Housing International. Linda Brockway has served on the board of CHI ever since and has brought a wealth of financial knowledge to our international events. CHI is very grateful for Greg’s vision and support throughout the years.

You can read more about Greg’s legacy on NAHC’s website.
