The Blueprint for a Co-operative Decade – An Interpretive Statement for Canada’s Housing Co-ops
The elements of the CHF Canada Blueprint have great resonance for Canada’s housing co-ops because they so closely align with the priorities of 2020 Vision: good governance, sound management, planning and reinvestment, and the long-term sustainability of our co-ops, all within the context of our co-operative values and identity.
The Blueprint is therefore a lens through which the aspirations and goals of the worldwide co-operative movement can be seen to connect with CHF Canada’s current initiatives and plans.
In 2012, the General Assembly of the International Co-operative Alliance developed the Blueprint for a Co-operative Decade. The Blueprint is intended as a legacy of the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives. Its five elements unite co-operatives worldwide as a distinct form of sustainable, people-centred enterprise.
The International Co-operative Alliance is encouraging all affiliated organizations to adopt and apply the Blueprint elements to their own co-operative enterprises. Canada’s housing co-ops affiliate with the international movement through the Canadian Co-operative Association (now Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada) and through CHF Canada’s direct membership in Co-operative Housing International, the housing sector of the global co operative movement.
